THE HUMANITY BET

Privacy Policy

1. Controller

The controller within the meaning of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is: Marc Baumann, c/o COCENTER, Koppoldstr. 1, 86551 Aichach, email: info@thehumanitybet.com (see also Legal Notice).

2. General Principles of Data Processing

We process personal data only to the extent necessary to provide this website and its features, or to the extent you have consented to processing. Depending on the case, the legal basis is Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR (consent), Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (performance of a contract or pre-contractual measures, e.g. for a payment), and Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest, e.g. in a functioning, abuse-protected operation of the site).

3. Hosting and Server Log Data

This website is operated via Vercel Inc. The database in which participation and project data is stored is operated at TiDB Cloud (provider: PingCAP), physically on servers in Frankfurt am Main (Germany/EU). The domain and email delivery run via All-Inkl (Germany). When you visit the website, these providers automatically collect technical access data (including IP address, date and time of access, page requested, browser type), as is the case with practically every web server. This data is used for the technical provision and security of the offering and is automatically deleted after a limited time. Data processing agreements are in place with Vercel Inc. and with TiDB Cloud/PingCAP, including EU standard contractual clauses for any data transfers outside the EU. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in the operation and security of the website).

4. Participating in "The Humanity Bet" (Accept the Bet)

If you accept the bet, we process the following data:

  • the amount you chose or entered,
  • the country you selected,
  • optionally: a display name of your choice and a short message,
  • your decision on whether or not to appear publicly on the "Humanity Wall",
  • a one-way checksum (hash) derived from your IP address — the actual IP address itself is not stored for this purpose; the hash is used solely to detect abuse (e.g. automated mass submissions).

Your email address is not collected at this point and is never displayed publicly. Real payments are handled via Stripe and PayPal; payment data (card numbers, PayPal account details, etc.) is processed exclusively by these payment providers and not stored by us. This may involve data transfers outside the EU, carried out on the basis of standard contractual clauses or Stripe's and PayPal's own privacy notices. The legal basis is your consent through active participation (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR) and the performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).

5. Project Suggestions

If you suggest a children's project via the form, we process the project details you enter (project name, country, organization, website, category, description, your personal reason) as well as — only if you voluntarily provide them — your name and email address. The email address is used exclusively to contact you with follow-up questions about your suggestion and is not displayed publicly. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR).

6. Voting on Projects

To vote on project suggestions, you need a personal voting code, which you receive by email after participating and which is linked to your participation record. Your voting budget equals the number of "HUMAN" units you've contributed (one cent = one vote); you can freely allocate or reallocate these votes across projects at any time. Because voting happens through this personal code, your vote allocation — unlike in a purely anonymous system — is linked to your participation record (including your name and email address, if you provided them); it is not displayed publicly and not shared with third parties, except as part of the processing described in Section 8.

The moment one of the first 10 verified projects reaches 100,000 votes, exactly those 100,000 votes are permanently frozen (pro-rated among contributors if the threshold is overshot) and trigger a $1,000 donation. Frozen votes can no longer be reduced afterward, though more votes can still be added at any time; if a project doesn't end up receiving the donation after all, the frozen votes can be released again. The legal basis for processing in connection with voting is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in a fair vote with little room for manipulation and traceable allocation of funds).

7. Local Storage in Your Browser

Your language selection is technically necessary and is stored in your browser's localStorage so the site is displayed in your chosen language on your next visit. This information never leaves your device and is not transmitted to us. No tracking or marketing cookies are currently used. Should an analytics or tracking service be added in the future, this section will be updated accordingly and, where legally required, your consent will be obtained in advance.

8. Recipients and Data Processing on Our Behalf

Your data is shared with the following categories of recipients, to the extent necessary for the respective function: the website hosting provider (Vercel Inc.), the database provider (TiDB Cloud/PingCAP), the provider of the domain and email delivery (All-Inkl), and the payment providers for real payments (Stripe and PayPal). Data processing agreements pursuant to Art. 28 GDPR exist with all processors named above, and, for transfers outside the EU/EEA, on the basis of EU standard contractual clauses.

9. Storage Period

We store personal data only for as long as necessary for the stated purposes, or as required by statutory retention periods (e.g. commercial or tax-law obligations for real payments). Project suggestions and participation data with no continuing purpose are deleted or anonymized as soon as they are no longer needed.

10. Your Rights

Under the GDPR, you have the following rights, provided the respective requirements are met:

  • access to the data we process about you (Art. 15 GDPR),
  • rectification of inaccurate data (Art. 16 GDPR),
  • erasure of your data (Art. 17 GDPR),
  • restriction of processing (Art. 18 GDPR),
  • data portability (Art. 20 GDPR),
  • objection to processing (Art. 21 GDPR),
  • withdrawal of any consent given, with effect for the future (Art. 7(3) GDPR),
  • lodging a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, in particular the Bavarian State Office for Data Protection Supervision (BayLDA), the authority responsible for the operator's location in Bavaria (Art. 77 GDPR).

To exercise these rights, an informal message to the contact address given above is sufficient.

11. Voluntary Nature of Provided Information

Participating in "The Humanity Bet" and submitting project suggestions are voluntary. However, without certain minimum information (e.g. country, amount when participating), the respective feature cannot be used.

12. No Automated Decision-Making

No automated decision-making or profiling within the meaning of Art. 22 GDPR takes place. Project suggestions are reviewed and selected by humans as part of moderation.

13. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We update this privacy policy whenever the actual data processing changes — in particular when a real payment provider or an analytics tool is connected. The version published at the time of your visit applies.
